Gabim Titulli: Gedichten

Sometimes I think we would really do well to have class that teaches about love in school. Because in many ways we've become such a me-focused culture, we enter relationships with that mind-set as well. I've gotten countless emails over the years from people struggling with their partners, and very frequently there's some rendition of, "They'd be perfect for me if only they would change some totally essential part of who they are." Of course it's never written that way, but that's the gist.

Loving someone means you see them clearly and you accept and celebrate who they are and what they need for their growth. The foundation of loving another person is loving yourself well first. Knowing who you are, what lights you up and feeds your soul, understanding your rhythms and what you need for the fullest expansion of your own heart. If you know yourself and accept and understand yourself, you will be able to recognize when another person is someone you could love. All the way, with your whole heart. But there's nothing clingy in love. Love doesn't manipulate or control or stomp it's foot. Love doesn't get vindictive or passive aggressive. Love is a blossom, not a weed. Love is a springboard, and when it's happening well, love is the doorway to incredible freedom. It's also the flossing of impossibly tiny teeth, it's letting your puppy out at 3 am, it's knowing that your best friend is hurting before you speak a word, it's a hug, a touch on the arm, a look that speaks volumes. It's laughter and tears and forgiveness and memories and of course you can. Love can be an unmade bed, a meal that's cooked with care, a note hidden in your wallet. Love is also holding a door open for a stranger, taking the time to treat everyone you encounter as a beautiful and complex human being with struggles and dreams and pain. Love knows how to slow down and get quiet and open to everything and become everything. Love can be a tree or the rain or the breeze on your cheek. Because it's everywhere, we just aren't taught to see it. You have to be soft to love. Brave enough to be soft. I wish that for you today and every day.

Sending you love, x x
